The Formula Of Quitting

Each one of you must have heard a specific line to keep you motivated. It might be your coach or your parents or maybe a small poster in some office saying ‘ Never Quit’. And it’s not a surprise that we get inspired just before giving up and start working towards our goal with a new rush of energy. What if I told you that this is not how you succeed and you have been fed the wrong kind of information that might also ruin your goals?

Yes, you read it correctly. In the world we live in, quitting seems to be a task that is impossible to undertake. Especially when the world is about to judge you on everything you do. For years we have been following the wrong thought or maybe we have evolved in a way that makes the old saying obsolete. And we teach our children the same thing which might not be right. Instead, we should have a separate lecture teaching when to quit.

A lot of successful people quit. And that is not a step back. Let us take an example of a social media site that we have known as one of the first, Orkut. Orkut was a social media platform developed by Google itself and was a good one for the time. Then came Facebook and other sites which took over the whole crowd. Orkut tried to retain their crowd but the world had already moved on. Google had an option to spend money and come strong in the social media game. They did a few things but they could not compete with the idea of other social media apps and decided to call it quits and invest that money in a few other things which were pretty successful.

Google knew when to quit. They had an option to invest a lot of money and could be successful but after investing a small amount, they knew it was hard to come back and that was it for Orkut. But that decision saved them a lot of money.

Quitting is also a skill and also a brave move. Let’s say you have a new idea for a startup and you try to push your product although you have no success. It’s good to push the product but if you have very little or almost no success even after 2–3 years, you should know you have to quit or it will eat up all your money and positivity and that is a depressing thought that you don’t really want.

So to sum it up-

Never quit is not the right way.

Quitting is not bad.

Just know when to quit.
